2007-2008 Season Preview
The MSOE Women's Track and Field team will be competing in the Northern Athletics Conference for the first time in 2008. The team will be lead by seniors Catherine Chappell and Heather DeLany. Chappell is a former Outdoor Track and Field All-American.
Chappell finished fifth in the heptathlon in last season's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She will continue to compete in a number of events this season. Chappell will participate in hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash and weight throw.
DeLany will compete in the high jump as well the 400 meter and 800 meter races this year for MSOE. The senior has been named first-team All-Conference three times in cross country.
Seniors Laura Anthony, Libby Nowak and Becky Schermerhorn will be competing in distance events for the Raiders in 2008. Freshman Emily Schmeling also will be running in distance events this season for MSOE.
MSOE head track and field coach Larry Gardner feels that everyone on the team leads their teammates in their different ways.
"All of the women on this team are leaders," Gardner said. "They just have their own specialties."
Senior Kristina Tielens will be running in the 200 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter races. Junior Maria Kiselicka is a transfer from Division II Winona State in Minnesota where she helped set a school record in the 4x300 meter indoor relay.
One of the key meets for the team will be the Northern Challenge at Northern Michigan University where the Raiders will be competing against Division II schools. That event is part of the indoor schedule for the team. The NAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place on February 29 in Kenosha, Wis. The 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships will be March 14-15 at Ohio Northern University.
The NAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships are May 3 at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. This year's NCAA DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place on May 22-24 at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
