Men’s Soccer Preview 2012
The MSOE men's soccer team has finished in the top four of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) in each of the past four seasons. In 2011 the Raiders were runners-up in the NAC Tournament and tied for third in conference play with an 8-3 record. Overall the team finished 12-8-1 completing their schedule with difficult non-conference opponents. The Raiders lose four starters to graduation, but with a solid returning nucleus and a talented freshman class the team looks to challenge for top honors in the NAC in 2012. The first shoes that need filling are that of their leader in goals (11) and assists (9), Dan Hosko. Hosko was named First Team All-NAC, 1st team All Wisconsin and was a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All America first team selection.
“Hosko is the type of player who is tough to replace as a point getter and as a leader” commented Coach Banks, “but I think we have a variety of tools at our disposal this season to more than make up for the loss of one of MSOE’s best ever players.”
Those tools include co-captains Brad Meissner (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead H.S.) and Patrick Gathof (Beloit, Wis. / Memorial). Meissner will anchor the defense at center back while Gathof looks to add to his six goal campaign from a central midfield or forward role.
“Brad and Patrick give us experience and intelligence. Both players have played and more importantly delivered in big games”, remarked Coach Banks. “Both of these young men know the value of an intense training environment.”
The Raider attack will be led by Gathof, returning midfielder/forward Drew Porter (Milwaukee, Wis. / Dominican) and bolstered by the return of Jordan Werner (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Montini Catholic). Porter netted 3 goals and offered 2 assists in 2011. Werner spent 2011 in Germany as part of MSOE’s exchange program. In the 2010 season Werner notched 4 goals and provided 3 assists. Also competing at forward is Nick Dobernig (West Allis, Wis. / New Berlin Eisenhower) and Bob Polgalze (Beloit, Wis. / Memorial).
“Drew and Jordan have the speed to turn defenses around and the tenacity to make the opposition make mistakes,” Banks noted.
Pulling the strings in the midfield for the Raiders will be another returning player from Germany, Dominic Ridolfi (Kenosha, Wis. / Tremper), Jake Tenut (Carol Stream, Ill. / Glenbard North), Noah Corbell-Wild (Minneapolis, Minn. / South High) and first year player Tyler Leis (Milwaukee, Wis. / Waukesha West).
Coach Banks is enthused by the depth of the midfield. “We have a lot of options in the midfield. Jake played crucial minutes for us last season, Noah is tireless, Tyler trained with us in the spring and showed solid ball striking and savvy and Dominic is a feisty possession player.”
In defense Meissner, Robert Nogle (Antioch, Ill. / Antioch Community), Matt Braden (Lake Villa, Ill. / Lakes Community), Paul Stimpson (Green Bay, Wis. / Preble), Matt Schultz (Brookfield, Wis. / Milwaukee Lutheran) and Jeremy Primmer (Lake Mills, Wis. / Lake Mills) all return.
“These guys each give us something, whether speed, aerial prowess, serving ability or the capability of shutting down opposing attackers,” Coach Banks lauded his teams depth.
Between the sticks Garrett Farin (Madison, Wis. / East) returns after an impressive freshman campaign. Garrett split duties with graduate John Cerny last season and posted a goals-against average of 1.15.
Banks looks for him to build on his 2012 season. “Garrett has outstanding ability and made some big saves for us last year. We expect more of the same this year.”
Finishing out the team is a host of talented freshman and a pair of German exchange students including: Brock Shilling (New Berlin, Wis. / West), Logan Andryk (Hartland, Wis. / Marquette), Nate Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Germantown), Mike Skow (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead), Trevor Cwiok (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove), Gerardo Rubio (Rockford, Ill. / Auburn), Matt Rink (New Berlin, Wis. / West) and Daniel Frey (Appleton, Wis. / Fox Valley Lutheran) along with the German’s Tobias Moller (Bad Segerberg, Germany / Fachgymnasium Bad Segerberg) and Manuel Spohnholtz (Hamburg, Germany / Carl Von Ossietzky).
Banks feels this is one of his strongest freshman classes ever. “You never want to be overly optimistic with freshman, but we got some guys in this group who should not only challenge to start, but could make some waves in the conference.”
When asked about his team’s style of play in 2012 Coach Banks was forthcoming about the team’s ability to create chances. “I think this year’s team has an ability to get to goal in a variety of ways that will make us dangerous to play against and fun to watch.”
The 2012 campaign kicks off on August 31st versus NCAA tournament team Rose Hulman.
