WORD OF THE DAY.pngretroactive

Retroactive has been around since the 17th century and designates operation with respect to something in the past, such as a retroactive law.  The Latin word retroagere, an ancestor of the adjective retroactive, means "drive or turn back," and goes along with the meaning of the word.

This means that RETROACTIVE extends in scope or effect  to a prior time or to conditions that existed or originated in the past.

  • Sometimes governments pass rulings that are set as if they were in effect before the ruling was even made, and that means they are retroactive.
  • You might be awarded a salary raise that is retroactive, meaning you'll get paid more for work you did in the past. And, retroactive fads in clothing keep vintage clothing stores in business.

sugar act - WEBSITE: http://www.teachertube.com George Grenville Prime ...

glucose

Two hundred and fifty years ago last April,  the British Parliament passed the Sugar Act.  This was a  a revenue raiser that imposed a tax on sugar and other goods imported from New World colonies, while also fomenting the movement that eventually became the American Revolution.

glucose is natural sugar that occurs in fruits, vegetables, and animal tissues. It provides the body with its primary source of energy. The word is from Greek for "sweet" = GLUC with the addition of the suffix -ose, which identifies all sugars.

This type of sugar comes from digesting carbohydrates into a chemical that the body can easily convert to energy.

When glucose levels in the bloodstream aren't properly regulated, a person can develop a serious condition, such as diabetes.

Mother’s Day is a day for many people to show their appreciation towards mothers and mother figures worldwide. It is an annual event but is held at different dates in the calendar, depending on the country.

Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers.

Early Mother's Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization, according to some sources.

Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptized, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.

The modern-day origins of Mother's Day can be attributed to two women – Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who were important in establishing the tradition in the United States. Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be celebrated each year. It continued to be held in Boston for about 10 years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, she played a key role in arranging a church service that attracted 407 children and their mothers. A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then.

Many people believe that Mother’s Day is now largely commercialized, with card companies, flower shops, jewelry stores, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and department stores advertising promotions and special deals for this event. Anna Jarvis, in her lifetime, unsuccessfully filed a lawsuit to stop the over-commercialization of Mother's Day.

Remember to let your mother know that you are thinking of her today.

Happy Mother's Day Mom!

Grammar point.png  WHAT IS SVO?

SVO is the basic word order of main clauses and subordinate clauses in present-day English:

Subject + Verb + Object.

Did you know...?

    • Compared with many other languages, SVO word order in English is fairly inflexible.

    • English shares this SVO order with other languages to which it is related, such as Greek, French or Norwegian, and with other languages to which it is not related, such as Swahili or Malay (Burridge, 1996: 351).

    • The communicative strategy found in the SVO word order can be considered listener-oriented because the speaker or writer, who has new information to communicate, considers more important the fact that the message is clear to the hearer than his/her necessity to communicate (Siewierska, 1996: 374).

Examples:

    • The engineer [S] built [V] a strong design [O].

    • The students [S] need [V] papers, books and laptops [O].

    • The professor [S] held up [V] an orange [O].

2416-1-word-of-the-day-all-in-one.jpgmonstrous

It means "like a monster," but it also means "abnormally huge," perhaps because we do not typically designate small things as monsters unless they are behaving very badly.  A long time ago it was used to describe  strange or unnatural events or people.

Today, we use this word to describe having an extraordinary often overwhelming size (gigantic) and in some cultures is even used to describe something very great  or awesome!!!!

The pattern of monstrous (where "monsterous" might be expected) is a regular transformation in many words, including disastrous and lustrous.

May 5th was the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nellie Bly, an American journalist who, in 1889, went around the world in 72 days, a feat intended to best the fictional account of the same in Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days. Circumnavigation is the Latinate way of say "sailing around." It found a home in English in the early 17th century and referred to the idea of going around the world from the get-go.
