Fluid Power Institute

The Fluid Power InstituteTM at MSOE is one of the leading academic fluid power research laboratories in the nation. Established in 1962, FPI is a leader in motion control and fluid power education, research and evaluation.

Fluid Power Institute

Our clients range from local companies to Fortune 500 corporations and NSF grants to military.

Research

Design Research Testing & Analysis

We perform a wide variety of standard evaluations, such as fatigue and burst tests. In addition, we offer many custom assessments for finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, hydraulic efficiency, and much more! Recently, we pioneered a new highly efficient design for fatigue testing, allowing for tests which run over 1 million cycles at drastically reduced cost, which debuted at the International Fluid Power Expo 2014.

Tribology

Fluid Power Institute is a leading innovator in tribology. We have developed specialized analysis tools like particle counting, ferrography, laser particle imaging, atomic force microscopy, stereomicroscopy and more. In addition, we do NSF-funded research and development on fluid power energy efficiency.

Engineering Services

Need someone to assess a design, schematic, or fluid formulation? We have the tools and the expertise to help you reengineer and improve new or existing designs.

Industry Partnerships

We are a member of several industry organizations. Through our 30-year membership to the Natinoal Fluid Power Association (NFPA), we contribute to youth outreach, ongoing/professional education, and industry advisory committees. Our staff also contributes material to organizations like ASTM and ISO.

Education

MSOE offers a number of educational seminars and certification courses through our Professional Education and Research Development (PERD) program. Visit the PERD webpage to find out more!
