What does it take to be a leader? Is leadership an art or science, or a little of both? Leading people effectively is a tremendous challenge, a great opportunity, and a serious responsibility. There are many perspectives we can use to examine leadership and its development.

A science of leadership has been proposed through the research of visible, expressed acts of leadership. An art of leadership has been explored through addressing the internal processes that influence leadership acts. These acts emerge from having a sense of self, clarity of purpose, and from being attuned to the needs of the organization and others. In this seminar course, we will focus on understanding and applying the external and internal processes (the science and art) of effective leadership to help you improve your own ability to lead. Strategies learned can be applied to organizations, community groups, and/or personal life.

Seminar Course Format

Sessions are held on three Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the MSOE downtown campus. Free parking is provided. Additional online activities are also required between meetings. This is a graduate-level course in the Rader School of Business so participants are expected to meet all course requirements. Those who successfully complete the course earn three CEUs. Seminar Course Topics

This seminar course is designed to build upon existing knowledge, while challenging your assumptions of leadership. The discussions will focus more on leadership development than on theories. However, leadership history and theories will be primary course readings, and will be threaded throughout the course. Essential to the objectives are the development of effective leadership strategies and skills that can be immediately applied.

Given the needs and interests of participants, issues addressed in the course may include:

  • Distinguish management and leadership
  • Understand the “next level” (movement from management to executive leader)
  • Examine leadership images, implications, and applications
  • Debate “Are you born or made a leader?”
  • Investigate successful leaders and lessons learned
  • Recognize why leaders fail and what to avoid
  • Appreciate the role of values and ethics to leadership
  • Apply historic and contemporary leadership theories to address current issues
  • Integrate emotional intelligence into leadership effectiveness
  • Recognize the role of servant leadership in today’s society
  • Discover the influence of diversity on effective leadership
  • Assess the relationship of personality types on effective leadership
  • Develop and apply a personal leadership vision/mission

Participants will actively engage with the materials through discussions, case studies, self-assessments, and exercises. These methods will be used in face-to-face and virtual formats. Lectures will be kept to a minimum. Top corporate leaders will provide guest lectures and highlight the application of the course concepts.

About the Instructor

Dr. Kelly Ottman has extensive experience providing leadership programs to executives and aspiring leaders throughout the world. Her Ph.D. in Adult Education includes emphasis on Organizational Leadership. In addition to teaching in MSOE’s Rader School of Business, Dr. Ottman has extensive experience facilitating leadership programs and providing individualized coaching for local, national, and international executive leaders, leadership teams, and management groups from an array of industries and professions.
