Civil Engineering
Class of 2014

“I chose MSOE because of the small classes, and the job placement rate. I knew I could get more hands-on experience and learn more from smaller classes.”

Civil engineering major Jon Allen originally planned to major in electrical engineering, but switched because of his desire to work on larger-scale projects. He also liked the variety of positions available in that field. “I have relatives who are civil engineers and they have completely different roles as civil engineers. They told me that I could do anything I wanted as a civil engineer. And I am starting to figure that out, as we are learning a wide variety of topics in our classes so far.”

Jon enjoys the small class sizes and laboratory experience at MSOE. “I chose MSOE because of the small classes, and the job placement rate. I knew I could get more hands-on experience and learn more from smaller classes.”

Jon also has enjoyed getting first-hand experience through an internship. “For my internship I worked with SAIC (now Liedos), in their Energy, Environmental and Infrastructure division. I was on a biomass power plant (in Plainfield, Conn.) that was under construction. During those two summers, I tracked and identified all the equipment that showed up on site. I also was on the Construction Turnover Team, which met with the subcontractors and the operators and walked through every system in the plant (68 in total) to ensure every system was complete enough to turn over to the commission team. Being a part of that team let me see every inch of that power plant over the summer. This was supposed to be an internship for one summer, but since I already knew the project and the team, they invited me back. I also thought this company was cool because SAIC is ranked number 23 in the top 200 environmental firms.”

When he graduates, Jon hopes to leverage his knowledge in environmental engineering. “I enjoy solving problems that will help improve the conditions that people live in. That’s why I chose environmental engineering as my specialty.”
