Business Management and
Industrial Engineering

Class of 2015

In addition to its academic reputation, Spenser Brown was drawn to MSOE because if its hockey program. The business management and industrial engineering double major played hockey at the Junior A level during and after high school. After two years on the MSOE team, however, several injuries forced him to hang up his skates for good. But Spenser found plenty to keep himself busy.

In addition to his double-major work load, he started a small investment advising business two years ago, which in part inspired his decision to pursue a business management major. “Since that time, I’ve grown my company and have developed a huge passion for the industry. The business management major has furthered my understanding of how different business components are connected, and it has taught me many of the soft skills needed to succeed in industry. At the same time, I knew that studying industrial engineering with a mathematics minor would teach me problem solving and analytic skills.”

Spenser enjoys the close interaction he has with faculty members, as well as extracurricular activities. “MSOE has many great qualities, but I’m most impressed by everyone’s willingness to help each other. The faculty and staff at MSOE spend time with students before and after class ensuring that we’re grasping the material. There are also a lot of fun activities on campus and throughout the city.”

Spenser will have the opportunity to put his classroom skills to the test this summer, when he pursues an analyst internship position with a financial company in Seattle. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best investment professionals in the world.”

When he’s not working on his business or homework, he serves as an assistant coach for the hockey team and co-president of the MSOE Investment Club. “I’m also helping with the production of a music album for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. These activities keep me busy, but I really enjoy the time I devote to them!”

After graduation, Spenser plans on pursuing a career in the financial industry. “I hope that I can continue to surround myself with very intelligent people so that I can develop my skill set. In the very distant future, I’d love to start a charity foundation and become a professor.”
