Five Easy Steps to Obtaining Financial Aid at MSOE
1.) Apply for Admission
In order to be considered for financial aid, you must first be accepted for admission to MSOE. Your formal admission is used to evaluate your eligibility for financial aid. Click here to apply online.
2.) Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN)
In order to sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), both the student and one parent need a PIN from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). A PIN can be requested at www.pin.ed.gov.
3.) Complete the FAFSA
The FAFSA is the only form needed to apply for institutional, state, and federal financial aid at MSOE. MSOE encourages you to file online at www.fafsa.gov. When filing, you will need to list MSOE's school code, which is: 003868. You can start filing the FAFSA beginning Jan. 1 of the year you plan on enrolling. MSOE encourages you to have your FAFSA processed by our priority deadline of March 15th.
The FAFSA asks income and asset information from both parents and students to calculate your Expected Family Contribution.
Families are encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and IRS tax return Transcripts when completing the FAFSA application. This tool allows you to directly import your federal tax information into your FAFSA. This tool is available 2-3 weeks after you submit your federal taxes electronically, and up to 8 weeks after filing your taxes by mail.
MSOE will receive a processed application electronically from ED within two to four weeks after completion of your FAFSA.
4.) Complete Verification (if selected)
If selected, you will be required to submit a MSOE Verification Worksheet along with you and your parent’s IRS Tax Transcript. You can request IRS tax transcripts by contacting the IRS at (800) 829-1040 or visiting www.irs.gov. Or you can submit a MSOE Verification Worksheet to MSOE and update your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. MSOE will notify you by mail or MSOE email if you are selected for verification.
5.) Respond to Your Award Offer
Once you have completed the FAFSA, MSOE will use your FAFSA to determine your eligibility for institutional, state and federal funds. We will mail you (returning students will receive an email) an award offer listing all of the aid you are eligible for. It is important to follow all instructions on the award offer, as there may be additional steps you must complete. Please refer to the Claiming Your Financial Aid Award brochure for instructions and frequently asked questions.
