According to the Higher Education Research Institute, 46.8 percent of surveyed freshmen “frequently” or “occasionally” felt lonely or homesick. It’s not only an emotional challenge for students, but for their parents and families as well. The Jed Foundation has noted that for first-year college students, emotional issues are the main reason for lack of academic success.

A free online resource aimed at helping both students and parents adjust emotionally to college can be found at www.transitionyear.org. Some of the resources include: college-focused information on mental health and wellness, articles and checklists for both parents and students, and more.
