TEAMS Competition

Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science

Next competition: March 4, 2009
Registration deadline: February 18, 2009

TEAMS is an interscholastic competition that provides a challenge to help prepare students for tomorrow's world - today. Students learn how the math and science concepts they are learning in high school are applied to real-world problems. In addition, the TEAMS program encourages team cooperation and group effort, cooperative learning strategy, and problem-solving skills.

Each year, more than 20,000 high school students and coaches participate at more than 100 TEAMS sites across the country. TEAMS is a one-day, two-part exam. Part I scores will determine local and state rankings and national eligibility; Part II scores will determine national rankings. All teams will take both parts.

Who Can Participate?
Teams consist of four-to-eight students, from grades nine-to-twelve. To enable the broadest range of participants, schools may enter multiple varsity and/or junior varsity teams, and there are 10 competition divisions based on 12th grade enrollment and school admissions policy. Varsity and junior varsity teams take the same test; however, they are ranked separately for state and national awards and recognition. Junior varsity teams cannot have 12th graders on their team. Entering a JV team is a good way for students to develop skills and build your school's team for the future.

The TEAMS Test
The TEAMS exam is a rigorous one that requires students to think critically. Team members should have knowledge of math, chemistry, physics, biology and computer applications. The questions posed represent college freshman-level engineering courses.

Past problems on TEAMS exams offer students the opportunity to see how engineering touches almost every aspect of our lives. Past questions, for example, have dealt with such real-world engineering issues as air transportation; bridge design and rehabilitation; flood analysis; solar powered vehicles and food preservation.

Student teams work in an open-book, open-note, open-discussion format. The TEAMS exam is given in two parts, each of which lasts 90 minutes. Part I consists of a series of objective, multiple choice questions related to various engineering situations. Part II requires students to describe and defend their solutions to open-ended, subjective questions related to problems from Part I.

Awards
From this one-day, two-part competition, local, state and national awards and recognition are determined.

Local Awards
Determined by Part I scores, awards will be presented to winning teams at the conclusion of the day's competition.

State Awards
State rankings are announced by JETS and determined by compiling all Part I scores and ranking the teams by state, level (Varsity/JV) and division.

National Eligibility
National eligibility is announced by JETS and is determined by state ranking and Part I score.

National Rankings and Awards
National rankings are determined by compiling all nationally eligible Part II total scores and ranking the teams by division and level. JETS will provide awards to the top 10 teams in each division, plus participation certificates to all nationally eligible teams. Additional awards may be added.
