John Cannon '87

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Class: 1987

What is your current job title/name of the company?
Vice President – Engineering, Walker Group Holdings

Has your MSOE education prepared you for the workforce? If so, how?
As expected, MSOE prepared me well for the technical aspects of a career in engineering, through classroom and laboratory work. But, also, MSOE help me develop skills in non-technical disciplines that have been invaluable in my career. For example, the speech and technical writing skills I learned from the humanities course work allowed me to deliver when I testified before a Congressional subcommittee, and then, the National Transportation Safety Board on various engineering issues.

Do you find that employers have a favorable image of MSOE graduates?
Indeed!  Our company has hired several MSOE graduates over the past two decades, largely because we are confident an MSOE graduate will be able to make a contribution to our company, relatively quickly.

What advice do you have for current or prospective MSOE students?

  • Always ponder how you will be able to make a difference, and pursue this area with passion.
  • Commit yourself to life-long education.
  • Do what you enjoy, and your career will be a hobby – with compensation!
