Major: Mechanical Engineering Technology
Class: 1987
What was your career path leading up to your current positions?
I started in product design at Kohler Co. and then moved into lawn and garden equipment at Lawn Boy and later at Bolens. After holding engineering positions at other various companies including Harley-Davidson, I formed Engineered Solutions, Inc. (ESI) in 1996, where I landed a substantial account at Master Lock rebuilding their product development group. In 2003 I started Aero-Stream®, LLC after developing a process to restore a failed septic system at my home. Utilizing no outside capital, Aero-Stream® has experienced substantial growth. We have been able to double sales every year, hire employees and build a new facility.
How long did it take you to design and build the Aero-Stream® system?
The original process and the product were in development for a little over a year. We have refined and improved the process and product during the past five years. The refinement has lead to several additional U.S. and international patents and patent applications.
How has your degree from MSOE helped you in your career?
MSOE provided a well-rounded education that allowed me to excel in many different industries. Life is about practical solutions. The applications-based curriculum trained me to analyze a situation, identify the root cause or issue, and determine the most expeditious and robust solution.
What advice would you have for current students who are looking to start their own business?
Being an entrepreneur can be both challenging and very rewarding. I tell others "the best thing about owning my own business is that I can work any 80 hours a week that I want." This is not far from the truth. Entrepreneurs must have the drive and determination to succeed. If the thought of the unknown causes you to lose sleep at night, consider staying in the corporate world. The upside to being an entrepreneur is that the potential is virtually without limits. Set your goals and achieve!
What is your favorite thing about your job? Least favorite?
The favorite part of my job is making a difference in peoples' lives. Whether in a corporate position or as an entrepreneur, it is challenging and rewarding to help people solve problems they have in their homes or businesses. I enjoy designing a product that improves their quality of life. As with most entrepreneurs, we are doers.
What are some of your favorite memories from MSOE?
I will always remember campus life. This was my first experience living away from home. However, the most memorable event was getting a Thermodynamics test back from Professor Butterfield. Admittedly an unusual event, I had scored the highest grade in the class. This was a pivotal point in my academic career. I had finally turned the corner. My attitude towards education and grade point improved dramatically after this.
