Summer 2009 issue of Dimensions
Students on campus have a new way to satisfy their caffeine fix-and for some, their credit requirements too. The student-run Blatz Café, located in the lobby of the Blatz Condominiums, is open for business. All aspects of the café, from marketing and accounting to operations management, are handled by a team of experienced Rader School of Business (RSOB) students from various business-oriented majors.
The idea of having a student-led business venture, something strongly supported by RSOB faculty, became reality when select students convinced both the Blatz Condominium Association and MSOE administration that the café would serve as a coffee shop and as a method through which students can apply their business-oriented education. Said Dr. Steven Bialek, chairman of the RSOB, "These students truly represent what MSOE is all about. The initiative they showed in creating a proposal and business plan for the coffee shop demonstrates that they are actively engaged in their education and have a desire to carry their knowledge beyond the classroom.

The Blatz Café, open to the general public, is becoming an integral part of the RSOB and MSOE community. The coffee shop was integrated into the curricula of seven different RSOB courses in the spring quarter alone. Café operations not only provide experience-oriented employment for MSOE students, but also supplement MSOE's vision and goals of student-empowered education and curricula.
