Major: Architectural Engineering/Construction Management

Class: 2012

Where are you from?
Chicago

What do you like about the AE/CM program?
I like how the program gets the students involved in major-specific courses right away. As freshmen, AE/CMs take a class called AE-100, which introduces them to their major and the types of things they will be doing during their time here at MSOE. The professors are great and all of them have experience in the industry so they have real-world stories to share and relate each topic to.

Why did you choose AE/CM as your major?
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a part of creating a building. I originally thought about being an architect, but I decided that that was too focused on the art aspect and appearance of the building. I decided to go to school for architectural engineering with a structural specialty because it would allow me to be a major part in the building design process. I added the construction management degree because I wanted to know how the building gets built and how all of the different specialties come together, not just how to design the structural elements of it.

Why did you choose MSOE?
I chose MSOE because of the small class sizes and the fact that there are no teaching assistants. I felt like it was a better atmosphere where the teachers actually know all of their students and I wouldn’t get lost in a sea of other students.

What type of advice would you give someone who is considering attending MSOE?
Be prepared to work hard. MSOE is a great school, but it is very difficult and you will have a lot of homework. Stay on top of your work and don’t leave things until the last minute, this will make your life a lot easier.

What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I like to hang out with friends. We usually go out and get some dinner or watch movies. I also love to explore Milwaukee, there is so much to do here. The lakefront is beautiful, there are some fantastic restaurants, and of course it is always fun to visit the Milwaukee Art Museum.
