Major: M.S. in Engineering Management

Class: 2007

Gaining business insight
For those who are working as professionals in a technical field, like Jennifer Wisniewski, an environmental engineer, obtaining an M.S. in engineering management from MSOE can help bring them to the next level in a company, managing and participating in decision-making.

Wisniewski worked with a team of students to find cost-saving improvements for a division of Millwood Inc., an Ohio-based supplier of new and recycled pallets, parts, services and packaging machinery. With input and feedback from everyone from management to line employees, the team applied Six Sigma, Lean and other principles to find improvements. They switched the repair line for wooden pallets around to improve the process and gained a 3.6 month payback.

"I've learned a lot about business systems and how everything interacts within the company," said Wisniewski.

MSEM profile - Ghaith Daoud
Ghaith Daoud

Wisniewski's eclectic team comprised Ghaith Daoud, a civil engineer from Palestine; Jonathan Marten '02, a mechanical engineer; and Uwe Knie '03, a management information systems graduate from Germany. The team worked closely with Steve Klubertanz, the Millwood plant manager and a previous graduate of the MSEM program.

Daoud, whose company paid for his education, is pleased he chose MSOE over other universities in the States: "The practical and technical orientation of the program gave me the chance to apply what I learned. It's something I can take back with me to my job."
