Bibliographic databases are useful for finding articles published in journals, magazines, and conferences.
A traditional bibliographic database will provide you with the bibliographic citations for articles. The bibliographic citation includes the author, title of the article, title of the journal, volume, issue number, date, and pagination. Sometimes an abstract or summary of the article also appears.
A full-text bibliographic database provides you with the bibliographic citation and the full-text of articles. In other words, with a full-text database, you can often (but not always) get the actual article online.
The library Databases page lists databases available to you. Some of the databases listed on the library databases website are produced by information vendors who provide MSOE with access to several databases. For example, ABI/Inform is available from ProQuest. When you connect to ABI/Inform, you have the option of searching all ProQuest databases. To do this, click on the "Change" link at the top of the page, and check additional databases you would like to search.
To be effective in retrieving relevant documents in the library databases, you'll generally need to employ advanced search techniques, such as Boolean operators. Read the help documentation for each database! Searching each database is different. It is not generally effective to search these databases like web search engines. Call the MSOE Library if you get stuck!
To access the library's databases, go to the library homepage and click on Search for articles and databases.
To access these databases from off-campus simply click on the direct link to the database. When promoted input your MSOE username and password. Make sure you are not logged into MyMSOE, inside.msoe.edu, or the VPN when accessing databases off campus. Need Help with off-campus access? Click Here for Instructions.

The project requires your building to have two elevators. To ensure that the elevators in your building are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), use ABI/INFORM to research this topic. In ABI/INFORM, do a search for: elevators and ADA compliance. Find the article written by Leah Garris in the Buildings journal and list three ADA requirements for elevators that she mentions. |
