Library Catalog

To access the Library Catalog, go to the library homepage and click on the Library Catalog link on the top right side of the page under Related Links. There is also a link to the catalog in the Find it! section under Search for books and more. The web-based interface to the library catalog is called Horizon Information Portal.

The catalog tells you which books, DVDs, theses and other materials are in the library collection. The catalog will also tell you the titles of journals and magazines owned by the library. The catalog does not include the text of actual articles. E-books available at MSOE are also listed in the library catalog. E-book records feature links to the actual e-book or to the service that provides access to the book.

Information about your library account is available to those who are registered with the library. To access your account information, click on My Account and enter the barcode number on your MSOE ID or library card.  Account information available to users includes books currently checked out, fine information, and holds. You can also renew books that you have borrowed.

Search Options

There are several search options available to searching within the catalog.

  • General Keyword
When you search with general keywords, you search title, author and publisher fields, as well at the table of contents of books.

For all keyword searches in the catalog, be sure to use an asterisk (*). An asterisk is used as a truncation symbol, meaning that the system will add characters to the root of your word. For example, biomed* will retrieve biomedical, biomedicine and biomedics.

Study the results of a general keyword search. Select relevant records and then search on the subject headings that have been assigned to documents.

    Library Catalog

  • Basic Search
Conduct 8 types of searches: General Keyword; Title Alphabetical; Title Keyword; Subject Alphabetical; Subject Keyword; Author Alphabetical; and Author Keyword.
  • Advanced Search
Conduct 12 types of searches and the ability to limit and sort results. To limit a search is to restrict it to a subset of the library collection (for example, all journals, or all e-books).
  • Power Search
Conduct 17 types of searches, the ability to limit and sort results, and the ability to combine searches with Boolean operators.

During each catalog session, a search History is retained and can be deployed.  Customized results lists can be created and emailed.
