How to Locate Articles

Other Databases

Academic Search Elite

  • Scholarly coverage of all subject areas. This database is an EbscoHost product
  • This database is full-text. Many articles are available online
  • Remote access to this database is available (the password is the barcode number on your MSOE ID card)
  • In this database, the truncation rules are as follows: ? replaces one character and * replaces many characters
  • This database features proximity searching:
    • NEAR proximity searching. For example, tax N2 reform locates the words tax and reform within 2 words of each other, regardless of the order the words were entered in the search (e.g., "tax reform," "reform of tax plan," "tax and reform").
    • WITHIN proximity searching. For example, tax W2 reform locates the words tax and reform within 2 words of each other, but in the order listed (e.g., "tax reform," "tax and reform," but not "reform of tax").

In this database, searches based on controlled vocabulary can be effective:

(fuzzy W0 set?) AND application? retrieves 12 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Sets" retrieves 84 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Logic" retrieves 338 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Numbers" retrieves 17 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Systems" retrieves 322 articles.

Not all, but many of these articles are concerned with various applications of fuzzy sets, fuzzy systems, and fuzzy logic.

Applied Science and Technology Database

  • This database is an outstanding technology database. It is produced by Bell & Howell/UMI ProQuest
  • This is a full-text database. Many articles are online
  • Remote access to this database is available (the password is the barcode number on your MSOE ID card)
  • The library currently purchases this database from the same information vendor that produces ABI/Inform above. Therefore, many of the same search tips that apply to ABI/Inform are also applicable in this database.

This database indexes IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems. Unlike ABI/Inform above, this database features a controlled vocabulary subject heading for fuzzy sets. Results of searches for articles concerned with fuzzy set applications are generally very good in this database. A variety of technical journals and articles were retrieved.

"fuzzy set applications" retrieves 0 articles: notice once again that Web search engine techniques (i.e., the use of quotation marks) are not effective.

fuzzy set applications retrieves 26 articles.
Natural Language search on fuzzy set applications retrieves 26 articles similar to the immediately-preceding search.
(fuzzy PRE/0 sets) AND applications retrieves 28 articles.
SUB(fuzzy logic) AND applications retrieves 25 articles.
SUB(fuzzy sets) AND applications retrieves 10 articles.
SUB(fuzzy sets) retrieves more than 50 articles.

EI Compendex

  • This database is a bibliographic database only -- no full-text is available. This database is an EbscoHost product. Therefore, the rules and features associated with searching in this database are very similar to Academic Search Elite above.
  • This database is the world's best engineering database. Many of the best technical journals are indexed here.
  • Remote access to this database is available (the password is the barcode number on your MSOE ID card)

You will probably wish to start your fuzzy set research with this database. Results are quite extensive. You will need to keep in mind, though, that none of the articles are available online. If you locate an article that interests you, you'll need to do one of the following three things to obtain it:

  • Check one of the full-text databases to see if it is available there online;
  • Check the MSOE Library's Periodicals Holdings List to see if the library owns the journal;
  • Order the article through Interlibrary Loan.

(fuzzy W0 set?) AND application? retrieves 2,618 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Sets" retrieves 10,000 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Logic" retrieves 248 articles.
DE"Fuzzy Control" retrieves 4,907 articles.

Use this database to check the author affiliation of an author whose name appears regularly in articles concerned with your project, then do a web search (including a Patent search) on the organization to see if more information is available.

Authors in this database are hotlinked -- follow these links to other possibly relevant articles.
