Finding the Articles
Scholar makes available citations and short abstracts about articles, they do not necessarily provide full text copies of the articles.
If you come across a citation that has a PDF tag next to the title, you should be able to open a PDF copy of the article by clicking on the title. Some articles come with the link View as HTML. If you click on this link, you can see an HTML copy of the article. You may not be able to print or save a copy of the article on your computer, you can just read it.
If you come across a citation that does not give you the above options, HTML or PDF, follow the next four steps to locate a free copy of the article.
- See if there is a link next to the article called "Find it @ MSOE." Clicking on this link prompts a program to check through all of the electronic resources that MSOE owns access to. If we have access to the article through another database, you will be linked to the content.
- The second place to look is MSOE's Electronic Journal Database, a comprehensive list of all the journals that MSOE has full text electronic access too. Check the database to see if we own an electronic subscription to the journal you want, and also check to make sure the article appears within the date range of electronic access.
- If the journal you are looking for does not appear in this database, the next place to look is the library catalog. When you know the exact title of the journal, choose the second tab, titled Search, and enter the journal title. If the library owns a subscription to the journal, it will appear in the results list. Note the call number of the journal, and proceed to the first floor of the library where all the periodicals are located.
- If MSOE does not own a subscription to the journal you are needing, there is still hope. Contact the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) librarian via email, or stop by the library to submit requests for books or articles. ILL is a service where libraries share access to their collections with other libraries. As students, staff and faculty of MSOE, you are allowed to use this service for free.
