Focusing the Search

Most Google searches will give you a few million results, which is a lot of information to process. In order to get a more defined result list, there are many ways of limiting the search. See the following table for tips on how to do this. By combining and/or excluding terms, and searching by specific fields, you can get fewer results that better pertain to what you are looking for, which saves you the time and the energy of sorting through superfluous results.

Google also has an advanced search feature that makes it easy to limit your search without using the operators. The link to Advanced Search is located next to the search box on Google.

On the advanced search page, use the find results section to group or exclude terms. The domain limiter allows to you limit results by a domain (.edu) or by a website (msoe.edu). Under page-specific search, fill in a URL in the links box, and Google will list all the websites that contain a link to the site. Use this to find out the context of how the information is being used.
