FirstSearch is a gateway service providing access to 28 databases covering several subject-areas.
The Business and Management Practices Database features citations of articles on "practical aspects of business management." The articles that are indexed are selected for their "real-world know-how that focuses on how organizations make and implement decisions, develop and launch new strategies, and plan for change." Case studies and how-to articles are featured.

SIRS Researcher Database

The SIRS Researcher Database features citations of articles covering economics, global history, politics and social issues.
SIRS Researcher Database features more than 53,000 records published from 1988 to the present.

Search Tip

This is another specialized resource. A comparatively small database, SIRS Researcher may be used in an MSEM paper or project when relevant background information is required. Usually for large MSEM projects and papers that may touch upon the subjects covered by the database.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Database

Produced by the Society of Automotive Engineers, an international organization devoted to advancing the engineering of mobility systems. SAE is a major producer of technical information and standards used in the designing, maintaining, and operating of land-based, sea-based, air-based, space-based vehicles.
Features bibliographic data and summaries for more than 70,000 SAE documents, including technical papers (beginning in 1906), magazine articles, books, all ground vehicles and aerospace standards, specifications, and research reports.
This database is available from the SAE website. It does not contain the full text of documents. Check with the library to obtain documents. The MSOE Library owns SAE Technical Papers (selected papers are owned from 1958-1979, and complete papers are available from 1980 to the present). Special papers must be downloaded from the SAE website.

Search Tip

This is a technical database. It may be helpful in those MSEM papers and projects that explore technical topics in management, including manufacturing, design, and quality.

This free database, available on the SAE website, features limited keyword searching capabilities. Search the database with simple keyword searches, or advanced and expert searches, where you can stipulate phrases, or specifically search on the titles of documents.

EI Compendex Database

Produced by Engineering Information, publisher of the Engineering Index, one of the world's best indexes of engineering literature.
EI Compendex is one of the most comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering databases in the world, with over six million summaries of journal articles, technical reports, and conference papers and proceedings in electronic form, dating from 1970. Abstracts from over 5,000 international journals, conferences papers and technical reports are included. Each year, over 220,000 new abstracts are added from 175 disciplines and major specialties.
This database does not contain the full text of documents. Check with the library to obtain documents.

This database is remotely accessible. For remote access you must use the MSOE Proxy Server, although you may also use the MSOE dial-up service if you are in the local calling area.

This database features the following search options: Easy Search, Quick Search and Expert Search (precise, powerful searching that employs the query language of the database and features such options as exact match searching, Boolean searching, truncation, and other operations)

Search Tip

This is a technical database. It may be helpful in those MSEM papers and projects that explore technical topics in management. This database does feature coverage of the engineering management literature. Search it for large MSEM papers and projects, or for all papers and projects featuring a technical topic.

The most effective searching is the Expert Search, but the interface is not intuitive and does require a study of the help documentation.

The following Expert Search for example, retrieves 10 records of articles where the exact phrase "knowledge management" appears in the title and the word "marketing" appears in the abstract:
