How Do You Do Research

When you have to do some research, then, how do you do it?

Do you call your friends and see what kind of information they have?

Do you IM your buddies and see if they can help?

Do you try to Google an answer?

And if that doesn't work, do you try a really big search engine, like Dogpile?

None of these approaches to research are necessarily bad, but in college, it's necessary to learn more systematic and comprehensive ways of doing research. You need to use databases and resources that you won't find with a Google search. In other words, you need to learn about library research. It takes a little time to learn about these tools and how to use them, but the effort it is worth it. Many of these special databases and tools can save you a great deal of time in your class work.

The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce you to library research concepts and methods. After reading this tutorial, you should have a good understanding of the many valuable resources and services available for you in the MSOE Library.

STOP

Before you continue, though, please take a few seconds to answer three brief questions. Please click here to open up the "OR 100 Pre-Test." This is a quick test to measure how much you know about the library right now. Please type in your full name, and then answer the questions to the best of your ability. If you don't know the answer, that's OK -- just type, "don't know." After you answer the questions, click the "submit" button to send your answers to the library, and close the window.

You can take the same test after you finish the tutorial. If you are not sure about the answers the first time, you probably won't have a problem the second time.

Thank you

Thank you for doing these quick tests! The results help the library staff to improve this tutorial.

Now let's get familiar with the library and its resources.
