The Walter Schroeder Library was opened in 1980. It is named for Milwaukee businessman Walter Schroeder. Its fundamental purpose is to help with the academic research and information requirements of the students, faculty, and staff of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The library also makes efforts to provide access to non-academic and recreational types of resources and information. You can find comfortable sofas, paperback novels, popular magazines, entertainment DVDs and vending machines in the lounge area on the main floor of the library.
The library is appropriately located in the library building. The library occupies the first and second floors; the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Mathematics departments are on the third floor, together with classrooms.

Main Floor- Second Level
The entrance to the library is on the second floor of the library building. Also featured on the second floor:
- The entire Second Floor is a talking and socializing floor. Talking, group study, socializing, and cell phone use are permitted on this floor.
- Circulation area and front desk. Books circulate for three (3) weeks (with up to two renewals). Print journals do not circulate and must generally be used in the library.
- A printer/copier and a CSVT terminal. Use the CSVT terminal to place money on your MSOE ID card. Black and white photocopies are free if you use your MSOE ID card.
- The Reference section
- Two (2) "Quick-Stop" or rapid print stations for quick print jobs to the networked printer.
- The lounge area for paperback books, current popular magazines and newspapers, entertainment DVDs and vending machines.
- Tables are available for group study.
- Eight laptop machines
- Seven study rooms which may be reserved for group study sessions. Please visit or call the front desk (414-277-7180) to reserve a room. Rooms must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.
- AV collection of DVD's and VHS tapes, over 225 of these are on nursing topics
- The entire circulating book collection is located on this floor
- Books are arranged by the Library of Congress classification system
- Most nursing books are in the R section
- Approximately, 45,000 book volumes.
First Level
- The entire first floor is a Study Floor. Talking, group study, socializing and cell phone use are not permitted on this floor.
- Journals and magazines are kept on the first floor, newspapers are kept for one month.
- Master's theses, senior design projects and print indexes.
- ASTM Standards
- The microfiche collection which includes earlier volumes of Nursing journals.
- Two microfiche reader/copiers
- The MSOE Archives
Wireless Internet access is available all through the entire library! There are also several network connection hubs located throughout the library.
