Nursing Resource Center with Allied Health (NRC)

• This nursing specific database from Gale combines journal article access from over 400 titles with literature for care plans, assessment, nursing diagnosis, interventions, drug overviews and animated anatomy and physiology diagram multimedia.

For a search about teenage pregnancy, follow the following steps:

1. Access NRC.
2. Enter the terms teenage pregnancy into the find box. 
3. Click Subdivisions to see what areas you might want to explore on this subject. 
4. Click Risk Factors. You should see over 40 different articles on this subject. If the article isn't available in full text from NRC, click on the "Use LinkSource to find the full text" to see whether the article is available in another database, or you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan.
5. To see all the articles, interventions, and care plans about teenage pregnancy, type teenage pregnancy in the Quick Search box on the left side of the page. The Quick Search will find everything in the database that talks about teenage pregnancy. 

 

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) with Full Text

• This database is an outstanding bibliographic database. It is produced by EBSCOhost and it is considered a professional database.
• This database also covers many allied health disciplines including: Perfusion, Dental Hygiene; Medical Records; Occupational Therapy; Optometry; Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. You can limit your search to just nursing journals in the Advanced Search.
• This is a full-text database as well. Many articles are online from more than 520 journals.

For this class assignment, you will probably want to spend most of your time searching CINAHL. We will cover other databases later, which will also assist in finding articles for your presentation.

The short video below shows a sample search that will use techniques for finding the correct subject heading or descriptor and searching for that term. The database uses controlled vocabulary, or indexed terms to allow you to reduce the number of words or phrases you need to use to find a topic.

For instance a basic search in CINAHL using the following terms results in:

teen pregnancy (keywords)	274 records
teenage pregnancy (keywords)	507 records
pregnancy in adolescence (CINAHL Heading)	3101 records
pregnancy in adolescence (keywords)	3172 records

Try this exercise: Use the CINAHL Thesaurus and look up diabetes. What is the official CINAHL Descriptor? What is the difference between "diabetes in pregnancy" and "diabetes mellitus, gestational"?
