Other Medical and Nursing Databases

PubMed/MEDLINE
  • This database is produced by the National Library of Medicine and contains more than 16 million bibliographic citations and abstracts in the areas of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, healthcare systems, and preclinical sciences from more than 4800 biomedical journals.
  • There is a 67% overlap with CINAHL in coverage of journal titles.
  • This is a bibliographic database with some full-text; there may be links to full text but generally there is a charge for this service. Use the MSOE Library's Interlibrary Loan Service if the service is not available for free.
  • This database can be limited to Nursing Subset.
  • Use topical subheadings to further limit irrelevant articles. Go to MeSH Browse to find proper headings and subheadings.
  • CINAHL subject headings are used to describe many of the nursing topics.
  • The National Library of Medicine uses its own classification system for subject headings and call numbers.
  • There is a well produced tutorial on searching PubMed entitled "PubMed Tutorial," found in the Tutorials list.
  • Note: You can also search Medline through the EBSCO databases. This search will give you access to full text articles from other EBSCO databases.

NLM Gateway
Accesses multiple databases from the National Library of Medicine (including MEDLINE/PubMed).  This database offers citations, full-text, video, audio, and images.

ScienceDirect

Alt Health Watch

Other Databases

Nursing is a profession containing theories and viewpoints from many social sciences. Three databases which also may be worth investigating are:

PsycArticles

PsycARTICLES, from the American Psychological Association (APA), is a definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. The database contains approximately 150,000 articles from over 70 journals published by the APA, and its imprint the Educational Publishing Foundation (EPF), and from allied organizations including the Canadian Psychology Association and Hogrefe Publishing Group.

Try Adolescent Pregnancy as a descriptor or subject heading. The APA has its own index entitled Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms.

ERIC

The Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) provides a database on education. Most of the database is abstract information but there are digests on some topics available in their entirety, and full-text became available for many articles in 2004. This database is accessed through EBSCOhost. It is also available for free on the Web.  The database includes links to more than 323,000 full-text documents.

Proquest SciTech Collection

This database provides access to literature on natural sciences, engineering and technology. Some of the topics covered in this database include materials science, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, computer science, and earth science. It fully incorporates the ProQuest Natural Science Collection and the ProQuest Technology Collection.
