Lesson 2: Investigating the Field of Research

Background Information

Look at background information to assist you in determining a research topic. Background information helps you to understand the broader context of a topic and the information available. Consult the following resources for background information:

Dictionaries within a specialized area give definitions of terms and phrases within that field.

Specified encyclopedias expand on dictionary definitions and provide more context for concepts.

Bibliographies list other sources of research.

Lecture notes provide a professor’s insight.

Experts in the field provide insight and guidance about the "real world."

Periodicals (Internet, magazine, and newspaper articles) provide current and past information.

Professional societies also provide the latest developments in their fields. Consult the Encyclopedia of Associations.

Overall, make sure sufficient research information regarding your field of research is readily available to you in order to complete your paper.

Tip: Have more than one topic idea in mind. You don't want to limit yourself too early in the topic selection process. If you decide to change topics, you will always have something to fall back on.
