Step 1: Ask critical questions about your topic choices.

  • Can the topic be researched using the resources available to you?

If you have a limited amount of time, you may not be able to research other libraries. Therefore, you want a topic that can be researched using the resources available through the MSOE Library.

  • Can the topic be researched in the time allotted?

The detail of your research topic will be affected by your due date. If you have a limited amount of time, you do not want to research a detailed topic.

  • Is there sufficient information covering the topic?

Make sure you pick a topic covered by published literature.

  • Does the topic involve any great personal expense and/or time?

Researching your paper should not put you in debt or cause you to give up sleep. Pick a topic that has only minimum expense requirements and can be completed within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Does the topic involve social, physical, or professional risks?

Do not pick a topic that could cause you to lose your job or otherwise cause trouble. You should be writing your paper for personal insight and academic reasons.
