Lesson 4: Refining the Topic

If you feel comfortable with your topic, you are ready to proceed to Chapter 2 to begin researching for your paper.

If you are concerned that your topic is too broad or too narrow, your concern is legitimate and is relative to the amount of information that you will find. Don’t be too concerned about the amount of time that you have to complete the assignment. Following a proper research plan as identified in Chapter 2, and given adequate research, your assignment can be completed in the time allowed.

If you are concerned that your topic is too broad, focus it by identifying other aspects of your topic. Be sure to choose an aspect of your original topic that will lead to enough resources for information. For example, the history of the American Military is a broad topic that will provide you with a lot of information. You may want to focus the topic to address the role of the American Military in the Gulf War. Refer back to the professor’s requirements for length of the paper to decide whether you can adequately cover your chosen topic.

If your topic is too narrow, expand your topic focus. Reevaluate your topic to consider aspects you think will best complement the topic you have already chosen. For example, the effect of wind resistance on a football kicker’s punt is a narrow topic that might not lead to enough information. You may want to expand the topic to address wind resistance as it affects particular outdoor sports. Again, refer back to the professor’s requirements for length of the paper to decide whether you will have enough research to adequately cover your chosen topic.
