Interlibrary Loan Policies

About the service

This service is available to current MSOE students, staff and faculty, and it is free unless the cost of the request totals more than $25. Any requests that cost $25 or more will be handled on a case-by-case basis and and the costs of the request may be covered, either partially or in whole, by the patron.

How it works

Thousands of libraries network through a system called OCLC to request and lend materials amongst each other. In OCLC, we are able to determine which libraries own the needed materials and we can send requests directly to them. In exchange for borrowing materials, we loan our materials to libraries that need them.

Submitting requests

Requests can be submitted the following ways:

Requests are checked every weekday during the academic year. Every attempt is made to process each request within 24 hours. Patrons can expect to receive Interlibrary Loan items in approximately 5 to 7 working days, but it may sometimes take as much as 2 weeks or longer. Therefore, requests should be made as soon as possible.

There is no limit to the number of requests one can make; however, large numbers of requests will take more time to process.

Patrons will be notified by email when requests have arrived. It is your responsibility to pick up items in a timely fashion.

Renewals and overdues

Patrons who desire a renewal on an Interlibrary Loan item must contact the Interlibrary Loan librarian one week before the due date. There are no guarantees that a renewal can be obtained because it is dependent on the policies of the lending library.

Patrons who return Interlibrary Loan items after the due date are subject to an overdue fine of $1.00 per day. It is the responsibility of the patron to return the items on time. There is no grace period for overdue Interlibrary Loan items. The $1.00 per day overdue fine will accrue from the first day the item is overdue.

Lending libraries may suspend Interlibrary Loan privileges to a borrowing library which fails to return their items. This suspension affects the entire student body of the borrowing library. Therefore, patrons who do not return Interlibrary Loan items or who do not pay for lost or damaged items may have both their Interlibrary Loan and regular library privileges suspended. Any charges will then be turned over to the Students Accounts office at MSOE.

This policy may be modified at any time by the MSOE Library.
