Opposing Viewpoints Reference Center

What is it?

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a database you can use to find articles and information about current and controversial issues. The viewpoint articles provide different perspectives on every issue, and they include information from highly respected experts in the fields. To enter this database from off campus, you must be logged onto the Proxy Server .


Some examples of Viewpoint topics are:


Internet:
  • Internet use decreases social interaction.
  • The Internet connects people.
Nuclear Power:
  • Nuclear power is the energy of the future.
  • Nuclear energy is not the energy of the future.

Why use it?

Whether you are looking to better understand an issue, or you want to find solid research to back up your opinions, use Opposing Viewpoints to find the information!


How does it work?

Opposing Viewpoints makes searching easy!

On the right side of the screen is a list of popular topics; simply click on one of the issues to begin your search for information. You can also type words or phrases into the Basic Search box that is located on the left side of the page. To expand your search, click the button next to Entire Document under the search box.

Searching in Opposing Viewpoints


The search results are divided up under the colored tabs towards the top of the screen. Items under the Viewpoints tab are persuasive essays that take a pro or con perspective on the issue you are searching. The other tabs contain magazine, journal and newspaper articles. The Primary Sources tab contains research reports, legislation, speeches and government documents that pertain to the subject you are researching. The Statistics tab contains charts, graphs and tables about the topic. To narrow down your search, click on one of the Subject Terms found on the left side of the page.

Opposing Viewpoints provides citations in the MLA style!

Every item in Opposing Viewpoints has a link near it that called How to Cite. If you click on this link, a new window will appear that is titled Generate a Citation. Select the MLA button, if it isn't already selected and click save. A file should open up with the correct MLA citation, and you can copy and paste this in your works cited page.
