NetLibrary Database of the Month

What is it?

NetLibrary is a database of full-text electronic books. Access thousands of books- anytime-anywhere.

Why use it?

Has this ever happened to you? It’s midnight, you’ve got a paper due tomorrow afternoon, and you still need to find three books to cite in the paper. Too bad that the library is closed…or is it?

Don’t worry! NetLibrary is always open! Access NetLibrary by logging onto MSOE’s proxy server, and then go to NetLibrary.com. You’ll have thousands of books on a wide array of topics at your fingertips.

How does it work?

In the search box, type in the word(s) that you are looking for. The database will find all the books that contain the word(s) you searched for, and it will display the books in a ranked order- the more times the search phrase appears in the book, the higher its ranking is. You can change the sorting criteria to oldest or newest books first, author or title.

To look at the electronic book, click on “View this eBook.” The book will appear as a pdf file on the right side of the screen, and the table of contents is on the left side of the screen. You can click on the table of contents to go directly to certain sections, you can search for words within the entire book, or you can flip through the pages using the "previous" and "next" buttons at the top of the page.

Things to keep in mind

  • You need to be logged onto MSOE’s proxy server to gain access to the books. Each book can only be accessed by one person at a time.
  • Printing is allowed, but you can only print one page at a time. Printing the entire eContent item violates copyright laws and precautions are taken to protect those copyright laws.
  • It’s not always easy to read books on the computer. If you come across a book that you would like to read, the library can get you a “real” copy of the book through Interlibrary Loan. It will take a few days to get the actual book, so plan ahead.
