May Database of the Month

May's Database of the Month - WorldCat

What is it?

WorldCat.org is a website you can use to search the library catalogs of over 10,000 libraries from all over the world.

How does it work?

Libraries all over the world allow WorldCat to include their collections in this website. This allows you to search thousands of library catalogs from one search box, giving you the most comprehensive book searching tool on the net.  If you like to use Amazon.com to search for books, you will love using WorldCat.

Why use it?

  1. WorldCat is easy to use
  2. WorldCat creates citations for you
  3. Learn about new books at MSOE's Library
  4. WorldCat tells you where to find the items you are looking for

WorldCat is easy to use.

Simply enter words or phrases into the search box, and WorldCat will find all the items that match. Locate books, journals, articles, thesis papers, DVD's, sound recordings - anything that a library would have in its collection.

WorldCat creates citations for you.

Confused about how to cite a book? Look it up in WorldCat to find the correct citation. Enter the ISBN number into the search box, and click on the title of the correct book. Then, click on the Cite link, and a window will pop up with four different citation styles. Choose the style you are required to use, and copy and paste the citation into your works cited list. Easy, isn't it?

Learn about new books at MSOE's Library

When new books are added to MSOE's Library, they are also entered into lists on WorldCat. Sign up for an RSS feed to keep updated on what's new in the library. The book lists are divided up by academic department, and there is also a list that includes all the new books. To view these lists, hover over the Search button on the upper-left hand side of the page and click on Search for Lists. Enter MSOE into the search box to view the lists. RSS feeds are available for each list.

WorldCat tells you where to find the items you are looking for

If you come across a book that you would like to borrow from the library, scroll down to the Get this item section and enter your zip code into the Enter Location box. WorldCat will tell you which libraries in your area have the item. To see if MSOE's Library has a particular item, use the zip code 53202. If the book isn't located near you, use Interlibrary Loan to request a copy of it.
