You can make a difference in the daily life of one of our soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
MSOE has been sending care packages and letters to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since the start of these two conflicts. We usually send these care packages/letters 3 to 4 times each year. Student Activities collects the soldiers’ names from members of the MSOE community, and then sends upwards of 70 individual care packages in a single mailing.
Sadly, some soldiers who received our care packages have since been killed in the wars. We mention this only to emphasize the importance of the care packages and the personalized letters as a way to let the soldiers know they are not forgotten. A permanent wall and flag display was created in the Cudahy Student Center to honor of those who have served.
We are proud to have sent out hundreds of care packages to hundreds of troops whose names were submitted. Donations for the troop care packages have come from individuals, groups and families associated with MSOE. In addition, various MSOE departments and individuals on campus contribute to the project. Department support has come from:
- WMSE (MSOE’s own radio station): music CDs, DVDs, T-shirts
- Registrar’s Office: letters/cards, soccer balls/soccer clothing, beanie babies
- Information Technology Department: beanie babies/school supplies
- Career Services Department: soccer balls, notes/letters
- Office of Servant-Leadership: postage
- Walter Schroeder Library: books
- MSOE Bookstore: bumper stickers, cards/letters, t-shirts
- Enrollment Management: pens
- Marketing/Public Affairs: magazines, greeting cards, etc
- Individual faculty/staff/alums who have donated hundreds of dollars to support the care package project, and
- Student Activities Office: creating the program, stuffing and mailing the packages, candy, snacks, and any additional supplies needed.
In addition, we have sent hundreds of pounds of school supplies and toys for the children in both those countries. These items are sent to one of the soldiers in those countries who disperses them to schools and individual children.
