3 Tips for Interviewing and Getting a Job Offer
Posted 01/25/2010 8:30 AM
In a competitive job market, simply being qualified for the job is not enough. You really have to be good at interviewing in order to make a great impression. Here are 3 tips for interview excellence:
1) Have an interview plan.
Your plan should include how you will communicate the information that separates you from the other candidates (skills, experiences, accomplishments, etc.). You should also have a plan for what questions you will ask of the interviewers.
2) Prepare answers for the questions you're most likely to be asked.
Be specific in identifying past accomplishments that show your ability to be successful. Focus on the results of your work at past jobs and in class.
3) Know your interviewers before you step in the room.
This can be a bit tricky if the company hasn't told you who you will be interviewing with. However, if they have, a simple Google search could help you find what positions they currently hold at the company, how long they've been there, what other companies they've worked for and what schools they attended. Being familiar with your interviewers can help you be less nervous and may lead to an easier time building rapport with them.
In a down economy, interviews are hard to come by. Therefore, you want to maximize your chances with the ones you do get. Your confidence and your ability to quickly develop a rapport with interviewers and answer questions with clarity can be what gets you from interview to offer.
