Little Things can make a Big Difference

Your résumé, networking activities, online branding initiatives, and other big areas of your job search are important, but can all be undermined by lack of attention to the little details of your search. These areas are often overlooked, which can lead to disaster:
Phone and Voicemail Etiquette
- Your outgoing voicemail should be professional. Employers tell us that they will hang up on a candidate if their outgoing message is unprofessional.
- When leaving a voicemail for an employer, start and end your message with your name and phone number. Speak slowly enough that they can understand you. There's no point in calling them if they can't understand your name or phone number.
Always be "on"... even when you're not at an interview
- You never know who from a potential employer will be out and about. Be professional in your daily and nightly life, and no one will have anything to hold against you. Check the link below for specific examples.
E-mail Address
- Use your MSOE e-mail address or one that is just your first and last name. Nicknames or other derivatives can appear unprofessional and hard to remember.
Strategically utilize the File Name of your documents
- If you name your résumé "résumé" then it will be overwritten on the employer's computer when the next person sends "résumé.doc"
- Generic file names are not easy to find in a search
- Incorporate your name into the file name (John Doe Résumé or Doe - Résumé).
These job search strategies are often neglected, but can have a big impact on the company's willingness and ability to follow up with you.
