Phone Interview Tips

Aside from on-campus interviews, it is rare that you will have a face-to-face interview without first having a phone interview.  Follow these tips to maximize your success:

1) Isolate Yourself - Find a quiet space away from noises (roommates) or distractions (computer).  The Career Placement Office has interview rooms you can use.

2) Schedule the interview - If an employer calls you without having first scheduled the call, and it's not a good time for your to talk, ask if you can schedule a specific time that works for both of you.

3) Stand Up - Standing, walking and smiling can have a big impact on the projection and quality of your voice.

4) Next Steps - At the end of the call, be sure to ask about the next steps and timing of the rest of the interview process.  This shows you are interested in being called back.

5) Ask for an in-person interview - Your objective at this point of the process is to get a face-to-face interview.

6) Be prepared - Prepare for the phone interview just as you would an in-person one.  Research the company and your background, and familiarize yourself with your academic and professional experiences.

7) Ask questions - You have the opportunity to learn more about the interviewer, the company, the position, and the follow-up process.
