Networking Video - How to make contact with employers

Six degrees of separation?  It might not take that many, actually.  The chances that you know someone who knows someone at a company are pretty good, especially through the MSOE Career Placement Office.  We have contacts for ~1,000 companies, so feel free to e-mail Cathi Ferraro (ferraro@msoe.edu) a list of companies that interest you if you'd like to request contact info.

In the meantime, check out the video at the link below.  A former recruiter talks about networking and his process of screening candidates.  It includes this gem:

When I was a recruiting director, it was not uncommon to post a job and get 500-1000 resumes.  I would maybe pick out 5 of them that I would interview.  Now conversely, I would have a list of maybe 10 resumes [for external candidates] from people within the company that "said they are fabulous, we have to hire them." I wouldn't necessarily interview all of those people, but probably interview 5 out of 10.  So your odds are so much better that way.
