Tips for Networking
Posted 10/25/2010 9:40 AM
The article linked at the bottom of this blog has a specific context of law students in mind. However, the advice is applicable to anyone looking to use networking as a job search tool. Here are the four thoughts:
1) Outhustle your classmates: You are in a competition for limited jobs. Don't just do the bare minimum of phone calls and e-mails. Set up face-to-face meetings so people will remember you.
2) Always have a plan when meeting with people: Come prepared with information about yourself, and insightful questions about them and their company.
3) The goal is to develop a long-term relationship: They may not have something to offer right now, but you want them to think of you when something opens up down the road.
4) Always follow up: Send a thank-you note right away for their time, and continue to stay in communication with them periodically afterward.
