Techniques for Self-Motivation

Far too often people wait until graduation or the end of the school year to start searching for a job or internship. Unfortunately, a job search is a process that takes time and effort, so how do you get motivated to start early? Here are a few tips:
Start Gradually
Work on it in small but equally distributed time slots.
Maintain Associations of Pain or Pleasure
Visualize having to do everything at the last minute, and thus not getting an internship for the summer or having to settle for a low-paying job. This is a pain association.
Now, visualize yourself when you finish the task on time to perfection, and get to work an exciting internship or choose between two offers. This is a pleasure association. These kinds of associations keep your desire to achieve something intense.
Develop Realistic and Achievable Goals
Success breeds success, and not the other way around. Divide your long-term objective into short-term tasks. Now, divide short-term tasks into sub-tasks. Go about doing them.
Do a Variety of Things
Avoid monotony by doing a variety of job search activities. Customize resumes, research companies, follow up on applications, etc. You will develop a lot of confidence if you find several ways of achieving your goals.
Read Inspirational Stories
Get into the habit of reading about the life and achievements of great individuals. This can be a great source of inspiration for you.
Motivation is not something which always comes from external sources. It should be cultivated through conscious and deliberate attempts for lasting and sustainable results. So, get motivated.
