Introducing yourself at networking events, career fairs, and other meetings with potential employers is a vital step toward making a positive first impression. Too often we undersell ourselves in that crucial moment. Compare these examples of common introductory statements with the more advanced ones below:
Vague Introduction Examples- Missed Opportunity
- "I work at a non-profit."
- "I'm a volunteer coordinator."
- "I am a student at the Milwaukee School of Engineering."
- "I'm a fundraiser."
Better Introduction Examples
•"I'm a business intern at NAME, a non-profit that is geared toward solving the homeless crisis in XY County."
•"I'm a volunteer coordinator for ABC Group. Our 200 volunteers help us fulfill our mission to improve literacy in City, State."
- "I study Mechanical Engineering at MSOE, and am working in a 5-person team to redesign the chassis and suspension of the SAE Baja Vehicle for an upcoming competition."
•"Have you heard of the Great Fun 5-K? Well, that's one of the events I help organize to raise funds for XYZ Organization, a non-profit that's dedicated to help find the cure for ABC Disease."
Starting a networking conversation off on the right foot will impress the listener and generate interest in your education and work activities.
