Professionalism and Responsibility in a job search
Posted 03/15/2011 2:05 PM
Conducting a successful job search requires professionalism and responsibility. Etiquette can sometimes be just as important as experience. Here are a few important reminders that will help you be successful and keep you eligible for our office services.
1) Do not, under any circumstances, fail to show up for a scheduled interview. You must contact the Career Services Office at least 24 hours prior to your on-campus interview, and reschedule off-campus interviews as far in advance as humanly possible. Late cancellations reflect just as poorly on you, so research a company and job extensively before expressing an interest in an interview.
2) If an employer contacts you directly by phone, e-mail, or other methods, you must respond to that employer. If you are not interested in their company or opportunity, let them know. If you need more time to make a decision, let them know. Keep the lines of communication open and honest, because the worst thing you can do is not respond.
3) Make sure all copies of your resume are current with up-to-date contact information. This includes the one in MSOE Career Net; the electronic copy saved to your hard drive or portable drive; any you have posted online through services such as Monster.com; and any that you have already submitted to an employer. You don't want employers calling someone at your old phone number, or getting "undeliverable" messages from your e-mail address.
Note: Following up on employer contacts and keeping your resume up-to-date will help MSOE and Career Net continue to be credible resources for employers hiring candidates. Employers will stop recruiting at MSOE entirely if they have repeated negative experiences. Be responsible and professional when conducting a job search and success will follow in time.
