Upward Bound Application

Overview, Eligibility, Program Requirements, Services & Benefits, Application

Eligibility

  1. Low income (as defined by the Federal Government) AND/OR First Generation (neither parent has a four year college degree)
  2. A U.S. citizen or legal resident
  3. College bound
  4. Academically sound - at least 2.0 G.P.A. depending on grade level
  5. Attend Rufus King, South Division or Bradley Tech High School
  6. Student can commit to participate in the program until they graduate high school

Program Requirements 

General 

  • Students will remain academically sound and show satisfactory progress while in the program
  • Students will abide by all Upward Bound rules.
  • Students will attend all required activities
  • Students will treat all Upward Bound students, administrators, tutors, teachers, and counselors respectfully

Academic Year 

  • Attend all tutoring sessions for 2 hours per week throughout the school year. Ttutoring is offered at the target HS from 3:40-6:00 p.m. and at MSOE on Saturdays from 10am to noon.
  • Attend all ACT Prep classes at MSOE on Mondays from 5-6:15 p.m. throughout the school year
  • Attend the Parent/Student Orientation
  • Take the practice ACT test in the beginning and at the end of the year
  • Set academic goals and show academic progress

Summer Program 

  • Attend a 6-week program during the summer . Students will attend classes, and participate in recreational field trips, college tours, and tours of local companies. Freshmen will commute to attend classes and some activities. Upper classmen will stay in the MSOE residence halls from Sunday night until Friday afternoon
  • Attend Parent/Student Orientation at the beginning of the summer program
  • Attend Upward Bound Student Recognition Banquet
  • Rising Juniors & Seniors can participate in Internship Program
  • Top 10 Seniors go on out-of-state trip to visit colleges
  • Note: Students must attend both the academic year and summer components!

 

Parent Requirements 

  • Parents will be in contact with program staff at least 4 times per year through workshops, meetings, events
  • Attend Parent/Student Orientations in the beginning of both the academic year and summer components
  • Attend Upward Bound Student Recognition Banquet
  • Support your student's attendance in Upward Bound

Services and Benefits 

  • FREE tutoring, ACT Preparation classes, and summer program to increase success in high school and increase college readiness
  • Student is eligible to earn a stipend ($) for attending tutoring, ACT Prep classes, summer program, and for semester grades.
  • Eligible to earn 1/2 a high school credit for participation in the academic year program and 1/2 credit for the summer program
  • Assistance with college process including application process, financial aid, and scholarships
  • Academic advising, career and personal counseling

How to Apply for MSOE Upward Bound 

  1. Completely fill out the Upward Bound application, student/parent sign in appropriate places:
  1. Turn in application to school staff or mail to address on application
  2. Provide appropriate requested documentation (tax information, teacher/counselor recommendations, transcripts, health form, registration form, student questionnaire, commitment contract)
  3. Student and parent will attend an interview conducted by Upward Bound to determine student's appropriateness for the program.
  4. If accepted, student must complete a career assessment, a study skills assessment, and an ACT practice test before they begin to receive services.
