Upward Bound (UB) helps
qualified area high school students find academic success in high
school and prepare for success in college.
A national study
showed that Upward Bound graduates are four times more likely to earn an
undergraduate degree than students of similar backgrounds who did not
participate in UB!
Upward Bound is a
TRiO program funded by the
U.S. Department of Education. There are more than 800 Upward Bound programs
across the country, ours is hosted by the Milwaukee School of
Engineering (MSOE). Eligibility is determined by family income and parents'
education level. We serve students in 9th through 12th grade who attend
Rufus King, South Division, or Bradley Tech High schools, with programming
from September through August. Upward Bound and TRiO programs produce successful
students!
The Academic Year
component consists of weekly tutoring sessions where
college students help with homework and teach academic
skills that will benefit students in high school and college. We also offer
several college visits, special leadership workshops, test preparation and
practice, help with college, scholarship and financial aid applications and
more!
During the Summer Session,
a six week residential component students live
on the MSOE campus, and take courses in math, science, language arts, world
languages and study skills. The classes help them get a head start on the
upcoming academic year and reinforce valuable study, time management and test-taking skills.
College students serve as Upward Bound Tutors/Counselors and live in the
residence halls with the Upward Bound students. They speak to students
about the college experience and provide supervision and tutoring. Seniors get a jump on college preparation in a
Senior Seminar class where they explore college and career options and begin
college applications. Students also participate in many enjoyable
extra-curricular activities. Summer ends with a Student Recognition Banquet.
Upward Bound graduates have gone on to become doctors,
teachers, lawyers, university professors, counselors, medical technicians,
accountants, engineers, planners, artists, actors and more!
