Students in assistant professor Michael Carriere’s The Sustainable City course partnered with the Dominican Center in Milwaukee to build a community garden. The garden seeks to maintain and improve a beautiful, stable and safe neighborhood while also providing healthy food to nearby residents.
MSOE students participated in community meetings, planned the design and layout of the garden beds, helped purchase the materials, cleaned up the plot and joined with other volunteers to build the garden.
Carriere also integrated Servant-Leadership principles into his class. “My students now understand
how government, non-profit organizations and community members all play a role in the design and
implementation of a project. Servant-leadership also allows for hands-on learning and for young people
to see the value of working with people they would likely never come in contact with if not for the
servant-leadership experience,” said Carriere.
