In a matter of only five days (during Fall Quarter finals week), 19 students rallied together to build
a playhouse. The house was a raffle prize to support the MACC Fund Inc. (Midwest Athletes Against
Childhood Cancer) during the organization’s annual Candy Cane Lane event.
The students were led by Assistant Professor DeAnna Leitzke ’98 ’08, with funding from MSOE’s Office
of Servant-Leadership. The house features carpet, working windows and even a doorbell, and raised
$3,500 in the auction to raise money for childhood cancer research.
“All in all the project was a success,” said Leitzke. “It took longer than originally anticipated, but the end
result was wonderful. The students who worked on it were able to use the knowledge that they learned
in the classroom to make something wonderful to help the community. My goal is to find ways to bring
these real-life applications into all of my construction classes.”
