The NCAA track and field committee announced Sunday that Catherine Chappell (Lemont, Ill./Lemont H.S.) has qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Track and Field championships in the heptathlon, May 24 -26 at Titan Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Chappell placed third at the Gregory Invite, held At North Central College on May 15-16 with a score of 4528 points putting her as the eighth qualifier among the eighteen athletes competing this weekend in the championship.
The heptathlon starts for Chappell, a 5-8 senior, in the 100-Meter Hurdles, on Thursday at 1pm. Her three other events on the day include High Jump, Shot Put and 200-Meter Dash. The seven-event competition continues on Friday, with Chappell competing in the Long Jump at 1pm. She will finish the competition on Friday competing in the Javelin and 800-Meter Run.
The only MSOE athlete to compete at the NCAA Track and Field outdoor championships was Rachel Eggebrecht in 1997. She was a four-time All American, receiving that honor twice in both indoor and outdoor track. Chappell has a chance to be MSOE's first multi-sport All-American. Earlier this year, Chappell was a Kodak All American honorable mention selection in women's basketball. She is the school's all-time career leader in points and rebounds with 1790 and 890, respectively.
Her family will have a tough choice to make planning their weekend as her twin sister Allison, a senior from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, is competing at the NCAA Division II Track and Field championships at the Irwin Belk Complex on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Chappell, a senior two-sport athlete, ROTC officer and electrical engineering major, recently was named MSOE Female Senior Scholar-Athlete and Female Senior Athlete of the year.
Tickets for the event are purchased at the J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium ticket window. Cost for Adults are $7, $14
