Two-time National Fellow to Speak at MSOE Commencement Saturday

MSOE will hold its Fall 2005 Commencement 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at MSOE's Kern Center (1245 N. Broadway). About 70 students will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and Matthew W. Fuchs, P.E., will be the guest speaker and recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree at the ceremony.

            Matthew W. Fuchs, P.E., recipient of the ASCE/AEI National Fellow in 2001 and AIC National Fellow in 2002, began teaching at MSOE in 1965. He served as chair of the Architectural Engineering and Building Construction Department for 30 years, building one of the best programs in the country. He served as advisor to many student organizations and lent his expertise to major MSOE building projects, including the Student Life and Campus Center and the Kern Center. Fuchs is well known in the design and building construction industry.

Fuchs' varied industrial experience was a valuable asset in and out of the classroom. His engineering experience includes Crane Manufacturing and Service, Rhombic-8 Associates, 3-D-8 Inc., AllState Industrial Cranes and Harnischfeger Corp.

A registered professional engineer, Fuchs received his bachelor's degree from MSOE in mechanical engineering and M.S. in civil engineering from UW-Milwaukee in 1979.

Fuchs has received numerous awards, including: the WSPE Triple "E" Award (Educator of the Year) and the National Society of Professional Engineers-Northeast Section: Educator of the Year in 1988; MSOE Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2000; and AIC National Klinger Constructor Education Award.
