Shiely to deliver MSOE commencement address

More than 325 students will walk across a special round, rotating stage and receive their degrees at MSOE's Spring Commencement 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at MSOE's Kern Center (1245 N. Broadway, lower level one). John S. Shiely, chairman, president and CEO of Briggs & Stratton Corp., will be the guest speaker and receive an honorary Doctor of Business and Economics degree.
The Milwaukee-based Briggs & Stratton is the world's largest producer of air-cooled gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment.
Shiely joined Briggs & Stratton in 1986 as general counsel, was elected vice president and general counsel in 1990, executive vice president-administration in 1991 and president in 1994.
He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame, a juris doctor from Marquette University Law School and a master of management from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
A member of MSOE's Board of Regents since 1995, Shiely also serves as a director of the Marshall & Ilsley Corp., Quad/Graphics, Inc. and the corporate board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. He is active in a number of civic and professional organizations, including chairman of the board of directors of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
