MSOE hosts retrospective of German artist during Night & Day

MSOE's summer Gallery Night & Day show is offering something different - a huge sports-related painting - in a different setting, the university's new health and recreation center, the Kern Center. The specially commissioned 14-by-19-foot oil painting is the centerpiece of a retrospective exhibition of works by German artist Hans Dieter Tylle (b. 1954).
Titled "The Spirit of MSOE Athletics," the painting figuratively interprets the Kern Center in a style that is rooted in historic pictures and Gothic church paintings. The traits of perseverance, perspective and accomplishment are all personified by the real athletes -- current and past -- depicted, and team work is symbolized by the athletes' determination as they advance in a coordinated direction. The artist worked from archival photos of the athletes as well as live models in his studio in Germany.
Although the style is pure Tylle, the subject matter is new for the artist. The rest of the exhibition - some 25 works - is more in line with the industrial-themed paintings for which Tylle is known. His canvases are large, reflecting the size of his subjects, intricate in detail, but always include the human element. Tylle must get close to his subjects and this ‘down and (often) dirty' approach provides the opportunity to witness and even experience the scenes he paints. He will make oil sketches in some of the more unusual and sometimes unpleasant work environments. He has come to respect the dignity of people who earn a living with their hands, and has done his best to convey that to viewers of his paintings. Having thus experienced the conditions, he is well prepared to portray his impressions on the final canvas prepared in his studio.
A frequent visitor to Wisconsin, many of the works are on loan from companies in southeastern Wisconsin such as Kohler, Kondex Corp., Res Manufacturing, Aluminum Casting & Engineering, Mechanical Industries and Charter Manufacturing. The artist's Web site is www.tylle.com.
