MSOE has published a 60-page book of 17th-century paintings depicting village doctors, healers, quacks and alchemists performing their services with varying degrees of competence. Physicians, Quacks and Alchemists: Seventeenth Century Paintings from The Eckhart G. Grohmann Man at Work Collection at Milwaukee School of Engineering includes 31 artworks. The 17th century was particularly important for the development of medicine, as technology transitioned from the Middle Ages to a more modern view. Simultaneously, the art world moved from traditional Dutch paintings to a depiction of the more common life, including its pleasures and suffering, Most of the paintings in this book are on public view for the first time. It is available through the MSOE Bookstore: www.bookstore.msoe.edu.
